Salt

by Dabu

He is living
nine months inland
and from this distance
her death is just blue

He can still feel the film
on his skin from that day
he and his children waded
into that water with her

They were all kept
at bay, as witness,
while she kept on going

Beyond the sound of the
lungs, like waves breaking,
heaving and sucking back
whatever belonging
could no longer be found

Sometimes he finds myself licking
the underside of his wrist
just above the pulse
to taste the salt
